We can't change the past but we can change our future

I feel after a difficult childhood, being in care, it has made me the person I am today. Care life was hard being taken away from my loved ones but then again sometimes it wasn't so bad at times, it's now made me focus more on family and giving a go at creating the best life I can, helping others going through tough times even friends and family.
It definitely made me learn more too, about lifestyles and people, loved ones, friends and how important it is each and every day to tell people you love them, especially ones close to your heart. So, care can make a person sometimes, or break one I guess, but we have to remember positive steps in life and to talk, be there for each other share our experiences.
“It's special to connect to others who have walked the same road as you”
I've always said I'd be willing to do that and wanted to share my story with other care-leavers too, because everyone’s experiences are different, we are our own individual who took different steps on the same path, if that makes sense. We went into care and have met so many other care-leavers, it's lovely and it's like we are one big family circle which you can take with you through life and help with any obstacles you come across.
It's special to connect to others who have walked the same road as you, so please feel free to listen and I really hope it reaches many people and will hopefully inspire everyone, no matter how much you have gone through and hurt in the past, inside things do change and you are the person that can do that change.
“Keep focused and smile”
Make steps in making the right choices and positive steps in achieving whatever you want to achieve just keep focused and smile because we can't change the past but we can change our future, let's make the future a better one.

About terryMy names Terry Birkett, I’m 31 and from Grimsby Town. I am a care-leaver and I currently write about sport as a sports writer for my local team, Grimsby Town fc, which I will share a piece with you.
My hobbies are writing and football, also I like spending time with my family and friends. I was recently offered a role to write for my local football club so I took the opportunity as I studied journalism at college. Life's good and I feel positive everyday and believe you should grasp opportunities in life, as it's only one life. I believe, that you should believe in yourself and how much you can achieve if you try. That would be my best advice to everyone; if you have a dream in life make it reality, as only you can motive yourself into pushing through barriers. Growing up I didn’t think I would be able to become something like follow any dreams, but opportunities have come along and I have taken them, so it's very important to take them. You never know where they can lead you, if you can prove to yourself and in the work you are doing, things will fall into place and the rest is history. You and your future is what's the key to a prosperous life. I hope many of you care-leavers will follow your targets because we are the future of our own success, guys, stay positive and aim high! Here is my latest piece for my local newspaper: https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/grimsby-town-fan-opinion-holloway-3854152.amp |
